getting over the hump

here's what is getting me through these last few days of isolation:

thinking about pretty get togethers during fall months.

this picture just makes me feel good.

hot tea is helping, since i still can't stomach coffee. yep, bad huh?

my sweet girl. has laid here with me for almost two weeks. won't get out of bed unless i do. little baby.

speaking of baby, i'm ready to see the twins:( i miss them so.

headed to the doctor tomorrow to see if i can be set free.

Babies and Shingles

It's Sunday, and I'm laying in bed with Beulah. How bad could life be?

This week has been something else.

Let's begin. I guess it was around Monday that I first started feeling funny, but I thought I had bruised my arm or maybe got a little sun that day, and didn't think much more about it. That night I went and got supplies for our Book Club Girls Night and did some baking.

The next day, I felt like someone had taken a baseball bat to my neck and back. Weird, but can be ignored. We had a great night together with our new 'club'.

Wednesday, only the greatest day of my life. We found out Jared and Maria will be welcoming their first babe in the Spring of 2010. This actually still doesn't seem real. Too good. Last year I remember thinking clearly about what I thought their little girl would look like, now I will have to do some brainstorming on what I think a boy could or would look like.

I was a tiny bit out of it the night they told me, but we went to Target and got 'Your Pregnancy Week By Week', (a classic). And obviously Auntie Beulah needed a lobster costume for Halloween, and for celebratory purposes for Baby Hogan.

Thursday, still high on the pregnancy news, I kept trying to ignore how crappy I was feeling, and I couldn't think about much else besides wanting my parents to know they were going to be grandparents. (they all found out on Friday).

Started asking around to see what this pain could be from. Some people said pinched nerve? Had I lifted something heavy? (almost 50 lbs of twins up and down three flights of stairs 16 times a day..), so it shouldn't just now be getting to me. I was confused, and felt really tired all day, but again, like a smart one, did my best to ignore, until Friday.

I woke up and noticed a mark on my right arm. First thought: spider bite. Second thought: I am being slowly paralyzed by spider venom.

Later that morning, I noticed a rash forming right above the 'bite', and sort of thought, 'Enough, what is going on?'. I called nanny Mom and said,

"I'm pretty sure I have been bitten by a spider, is there any way someone can come sit with the twins while they nap so I can go get it looked at?"

After talking with her, she told me about having a spiderbite in college, and it didn't sound anything like that. Also, after talking to Jessi, I felt the same way. Didn't sound like I had a bite from their description.

Decided to hold off on Urgent Care.

I had two dogs to dogsit that night, so I just put this whole thing on the back burner.

Then my whole right leg started hurting. So, let's recap, whole right side feels like it's burning from the inside, with stabbing pain in my neck, back, and arm. What?

This is all relative obviously, but I feel like I have a pretty high threshhold for pain. This had been a gradual build up, but by Friday night it was screwing with me.

This is getting way long, can you stick with me?

Saturday morning, my plan was to go in to the doctor before doggie daycare work. But, I was too scared. My thought process was, right side=neurological, neurological=scary cancer or something. Ignored.

Went and did a six hour shift at doggie work, and threw the freaking tennis ball with my right arm all day (I guess to prove that I was fine..to myself? The dogs, not sure, but stupid). At this point I was still saying, I thought I'd been bitten, but feared I had a tumor. There's a girl training to be an EMT that works with me and she said it was definetly a spider bite and it looked like the venom had traveled up my vein causing the rash. Great.

After calls and texts from friends and family telling me I HAD to go get it checked out, I finally went.

Within 30 seconds of the doctor seeing my arm she said, "you have shingles". To which I replied,

"huh?"

Hadn't I heard of old ladies having that at church growing up? As in, please pray for my homebound Aunt Beatrice who has 'the shingles'.

Confused, I asked questions and she told me that after you have chicken pox, the virus lies dormant in your spine, and can reappear as shingles (in about 20% of people who've had chicken pox). The chances of someone under 50 years of age is very rare.

To be honest, I was relieved. Yes, I was and am in some pain, I was just glad I didn't have a tumor or venom spreading through my body. I can deal with a shingle or two.

Here's the big issue: can't be around pregnant women. And I don't know how nanny Mom will want to handle this. She hasn't called me back yet. So it's possible I won't be able to work for two weeks, and it's definite that I won't be able to see Jared and Maria and Baby BB Pellet (his or her size right now) for TWO WEEKS.

So that's my week last week. And now I'm quarantined. But, it's okay. I'm not sick forever. Just for a little while. I'll do lots of reading, and pill taking (I have to take them every five hours, weird, huh?).

Okay, my sweet Mom is on her way to take care of me. Just one of the perks of living close to them.

Must go, didn't sleep much last night. Okay bye.

best part of my year, part II

i was nervous as we drove down our street. we had an entire country to cross, and i had made all of the plans and routes myself. things were resting pretty squarely on my shoulders. not to mention that my dad had just been diagnosed with bronchitis.

this was a big undertaking, and we were also feeling the anxiety of having to navigate potentially treacherous roads as we wound our way up and over the snoqualmie pass.

highway 167 that runs through puyallup was packed, and almost immediately i was convinced i'd made a navigation error, but it turned out fine and we got on i-90 after waiting in plenty of afternoon traffic. beulah slept quietly in her bed that had been tucked in between boxes and bags.

almost immediately we started making our way up, up, up. within an hour and a half we saw feet of snow packed on the sides of the interstate. definitely the most snow i'd ever seen. the roads were surprisingly clear, and we made it through without a thought.

soon after we got past snoqualmie, the scenery changed. before i knew it, this is what we saw:

(not my picture)

i had no idea that eastern washington had so many rolling hills and farms. but i loved it, and as we drove through this, the sun started to set. we passed through spokane, and crossed the line into idaho, and stopped for our first night on the road.

[i am pretty sure it was during our afternoon drive down from the mountain that i realized i had left my purse in the new beginnings van. i called jessi, and could not believe i left my wallet in puyallup. i'm still kicking myself about that. nick or jess, not sure which, fedexed it to one of the hotels along our route. thanks friends.]

we stayed at this hotel in post falls, idaho that didn't have an elevator. if you could have seen how much stuff we hauled in and out of our hotels each night (we streamlined SO much by our last night)-- coolers of food, dog bed, dog food, our bags, computers, it was ridiculous. not even to mention a dog on a leash. getting our stuff up the stairs was a workout, and not funny after a very full day, that had started with a trip to doctor's care, and was now finally ending.

as soon as our room was quiet, and beu had been walked, we closed our eyes. phew, deep breath, settle in for a good night's rest. pretty quickly, i realized-- i had not thought at all about my dad's snoring. oh the snoring. my dad had stinking bronchitis, so i was just glad he was resting at all, so i didn't want to tell him or make him feel bad, there was nothing he could do. so of course, i took to my blog in the middle of the night to talk about just how horrible it was. ha. and twitter (see above). as you can see above, that first night, i laid there, and thought of anything i could do to make it go away. finally, i decided the most logical (?) choice would be to use my nail clippers, go in the bathroom, and shred the inside of a maxi pad and shove it in my ears. i was obviously dillusional. i had an iPod. that was suggested later, and i felt quite silly.

we woke up that next morning, made our 16 trips back and forth to load up the car, and kept going east. this leg of our trip was one of my favorites. we drove back up a very tall mountain and into deep snow.

there were several well preserved mining towns, so we stopped in wallace, idaho to check things out.

b girl loved the snow.

not too long after these photos, we crossed over into montana. my favorite state (maybe i love wyoming more? toss up). this day was the most oddly perfect one of our trip. we stopped at the university of montana and threw the ball around the university's practice field for beulah. ate taco bell (which became our go-to fast food), and got some coffee. after that break we drove on, and this afternoon was the most picturesque leg of the trip, in my opinion.

after several hours of driving after our break the university, i asked my dad to pull over on an exit* and let beulah use the bathroom, and maybe there'd be room to run her around a little bit to keep her tired for the rest of the day in the car.

*exits in montana are much different than i was used to. they all have cattle guards and are free range, meaning cattle just roam where they please.

it was late afternoon by now, and we drove up over a hill as we exited the highway and saw the prettiest scene..ever.

turns out we had stopped at a historical marker, and this was a campground for lewis and clark. as i walked beulah around, i looked down by the river bank beside me and saw a group of horses walking over to me. history, animals, farmland. i was in heaven. this is still my favorite memory of the trip.

more to come..[this is getting long:)]

a requirement

it's been a while.

the last few weeks have been nutty.  because of my blogging-rustiness, i am forcing myself to write something.

so here is something, i will download some of the thoughts and events swirling around in my brain very soon, if only for my sake.  there's not much room left in here.

for now, here's a picture of my little nuclear family:)

k, bye.

a mess.

i feel like a wreck right now.  let me paint the picture.

i am currently slumped on my parent's couch, wearing crocs (which almost automatically puts me in a bad mood), old camp crestridge sweatpants with no drawstring, that i have conveniently gathered to one side with a hair tie.  and for a fashionable finish, i have on yesterday's shirt underneath a big, frumpy hoody.

BUT, i do have a quad grande americano to my right, and a puppy to my left.  they seem to be counteracting my feelings of filthiness.  i am listening to hillsong, and about to take a shower.  so we're going to turn it around.

also, please know that i did go into starbucks looking like this.  and i'd stopped off at the park to throw the ball to beu for a second, and i sat down in the grass without thinking, so not only am i looking homeless, but i am looking like an incontinent homeless person.

okay, one more thing.  as i was pulling up at the park, i saw that someone had put a super cute tv stand out by the street.  i made a mental note to grab that on my way to starbucks.  in the 10 minutes we were at the park, that thing got TAKEN.  and this was not a busy street, this is like lower richland at 10am on a monday.  some people, i tell ya, taking the things i wanted to steal.

*post edit--i kind of forgot to say that i am moving today.  see you in charlotte.

stuffy

how i have been feeling and acting the last few days*

i am laying in my bedroom right now.  it's dark, and i almost threw my back out trying to unstick the paint-stuck window.  while it is usually so cold here at my parent's house that i have to wear a fleece, no matter the season, this visit has been a little toasty.  mainly because it is in the weird weather no man's land, where you really don't need to use the air conditioner yet, but you might as well start warmin' her up.  or coolin' her down, more accurately, i suppose.

beulah is laying in her doggie bed in the corner, and this room is totally filled with boxes.  let's not confuse the situation though, my room is tiny, three boxes fills the room.  though, for some reason, there are a bunch of empty boxes, too.  and beulah's crate and dog bed.  and my two suitcases.  there is one tiny patch of floor where i can navigate in and out of the room, other than that, it's yuck in here.

these past few days have been tough.  and not for the reasons you might be thinking.  i am somewhat in the zone with my parents right now.  though, i am ready to have some floor space and a bathroom that i don't share with both of my parents.  i think i am normally a roll-with-the-punches type of gal, but these past 3 weeks have been very gypsy-like.  and now that i have not heard from nanny mom #1, that means i don't have a job=back to square one.

in this time of dependence, i have not been spending a lot of time with the Lord, and it shows in my words and actions.  yuck.  i hate when i knowingly continue in the wrong direction.  yuck yuck.

a few really important things are coming together for the move, but more on that later.

*i threw tantrums as a child, and my mom thought it prudent to capture them on film.

a smattering

what life is like today:
  • first things first, my blog looks like a piece of garbage.  i have been working on a new layout, but for now, it will remain garbage.
  • lately i can't get enough of two things:  roast beef sandwiches and kettle chips.  more specifically, the sea salt and cracked pepper kettle chips.  they are so good.  wait, i can't properly explain to you, they are so good.  (putting them directly on the sandwich seems to be more efficient, and a timesaver, frankly).
  • it has been dreamlike and weird being back in columbia.  i have driven around with all the windows down, and the sunroofs open the last couple of days.  yesterday i went down to the river, and it was beautiful.  today i drove around near our house and looked at familiar places i haven't seen in a long time (old churches, places we used to play, baseball fields we spent summers at watching the boys).
  • i have a very important/exciting job interview at 8am on thursday.  progress!  thanks, Jesus.
  • sonic happy hour=good.
  • eagerly awaiting cowan baby news!
  • i found out my semi-okay full mattresses got thrown out.  geeze.  starting from scratch.
  • beulah loves her family.  a ton.
  • vitamin D is awesome.
  • true confession:  today i went to a big field to throw the ball for beu, i left the keys in the car, and let the music play at full volume, and sort of danced around (i'm telling you, this sunshine makes you do crazy things).  i was about 10 minutes into my dance party when i realized a new development had been built right behind me, and someone's kitchen window was looking directly out to where i was making a fool of myself.
so--if you need a soundtrack for your own embarrassing dance party, or you know, just something to listen to while you eat your roast beef/kettle chip sandwich, here's what i am listening to:

oxford coma-- vampire weekend

come on, listen to it.  (jessi, i am looking at you.)

i am still here

quick update:

my dad, beulah, and i arrived home to columbia safely on sunday night.  after a quick stop by the park, we headed to my parent's house.  jared was in town to shoot a wedding, so after some convincing, beulah and i hopped back in the car for another three hours, and made our way down to savannah.

i have been down here for a few days.  it has been both a great week, and a hard week.

i still have not found a job, and had a little bit of a breakdown last night.  just feeling like i am at everyone's mercy, and like people are doing me all of these favors and i hate it.

but!  it will get better.  and i think taking a shower in a couple of seconds is really going to make this day seem a lot brighter.

if you think of it, i could really use your prayers.  i really need a job.  thanks guys, will check in again soon!

currently

i have decided that i cannot use the delayed posting feature on blogger.  i end up thinking about it a few minutes before it's supposed to be published, and i cancel it.  not sure why?  i just always convince myself that it was stupid.

i packed up my first couple of boxes tonight.  and i finally plugged in my little ipod shuffle so it can charge, and so i can start making a killer road trip playlist.  though, i'm sure my dad will have his 'nanopod' as well, and we will be competing for air time, but that's okay because we have 42 hours of road to fill.  i am so looking forward to picking him up at the airport, and really looking forward to setting out across the country with my pop.  i know it is something we will always remember.

a nice shot of wyoming

after talking with kalle last night about their road trip out here last year, i got the crazy idea that we should buy a tent and camp out along our route about half of the time (and do hotels the other half).  i ran this idea by my dad and he just started laughing.  i'm not sure if he was laughing at the thought of me camping, or if he was laughing at the thought of him camping.

growing up, we were not a camping type of family.  my parents just aren't into it.  i was telling jared today that dad might bring along a travel iron and ironing board and attempt to starch his shirts while we're camped out along the south dakota highway.

also i am not pretending that i would be especially adept at the whole camping thing, but i'd like to try.  but after my dad stopped laughing when i suggested it, he said,

"um, let me think on that one for a day or two."

today has been one of the nicest days i have had in a long time.  woke up early to a snuggle puppy, and then headed out to breakfast at portage bay cafe near UW.  kalle and i had been comparing notes for months on their menu, and how amazing their food is, so we finally met up there, and got to talk over coffee, omelets, and pancakes.  really sweet time.

vegan pancakes, topped with good things

came home and saw that sweet jess had planned a get together with some friends before i head out.  felt really loved.

went outside in the sunshine and warm air, and played fetch with beulah, while texting back and forth with my brother while he was in class.  we talked about all the things we will get to do together in a few weeks, and laughed at the thought of dad and i sleeping in a tent.

forsythe park, savannah georgia

then i went upstairs and watched dvr'ed highlights of the bachelor from last night, as i had only seen the last 30 minutes of the after the final rose special.  the bachelor was maddening, but time on the bed with glory and jess was really nice.  then jess curled my hair using the flat iron.  i didn't know if it would work, but she made it work!  so now if i practice, maybe i can get it down.

after that a really mellow afternoon, and then our newest girl, who is from mexico, and only speaks spanish, cooked an amazing dinner for us.  really and truly did this body some good.

pretty much as of today, i am really not doing any new beginnings stuff.  really just focusing on moving, and it feels strange already.  like they're in the other room doing Bible study, and i feel like i'm playing hooky.

i don't know, several people have asked me questions about how i am feeling about moving, or how prepared i am for certain aspects of it, and for the most part, i am totally unprepared.  and today, i just had to become okay with that.  i am getting there, and hopefully tomorrow another piece will be put in place, and then another one after that.

i think i prepare as much as i can, and look for a job as earnestly as i can, but still be willing to step out even if it seems impossible.  really not sure at all what life will look like a month from now.  weird, huh?

as many of you know,

i want to live on a farm.  now, i technically live on a farm now.  but, when i say farm, i mean acres upon acres, where i can let beulah run free.  where i can have cows and sheep, and a horse or two.  and maybe not even the cow and sheep.  maybe just beu and a horse.

so, every now and then i search around a little on the internet for the type of farmland i would want.  i found a really good one, and i have been thinking about it all day.  here are some pictures, the quality is poor, but you'll get the idea.

now, i just need to get to work to make it happen.

conspiracy

blerg.

this post is really going to be about as exciting as the past few days have been.  not very.

i wrote a post yesterday, but decided it smelled a little too much of bitterness, so never published it.  it was mostly funny anecdotes about the girls that are living here right now.  but the funniness may have bordered on mean, so i drafted it.  i will say though, i'm pretty sure they're plotting my demise.  it could be all the LOST watching, but i am convinced that they are indeed, the others.

what else?
  • after months of working with Beu on retrieving, all of a sudden yesterday, she just got it.
  • still earnestly searching for a job.  at this point, i'm pretty open to taking one anywhere in the general north carolina area.  i really need a job.
  • oscar nominations out today.

okay, bye!

"small as a wish in a well"

it's a quiet saturday around our house.  the air outside has turned a little colder.  nick and jess have gone to a conference in bellevue.  elias is quietly reading in his crib, and glory is napping.  beulah is down the street running in a field with her best friend, tucker.  more and more, the smell of burning wood is filling up our little world.  every time i walk down our street and around the corner, i take a deep breath and think about the appalachians, and how i can't wait to drive up that last hill to our little cabin.

last night, i popped some popcorn, and threw a bunch of pillows on the floor, and for every kernel i ate, i threw one over to beulah.  and watched this movie.

2 weeks from today

i will be in the air, on my way to the east coast.

on my way to see a newly engaged brother, and also on my way to see a brother that i haven't laid eyes on in..almost a year and a half.

it is seeming more strange every day to think that i will be gone from new beginnings for almost three weeks.  away from my connolly fam and sweet beu.  elias and glory will be pre-pubescent by the time i return, and connolly fetus #3 will be practically full term.  yes, that's right, a lot can happen in three weeks.

my heart hurts a little when i think about leaving beulah for three whole weeks.  but i think i may have found a great place for her to stay (just in the last hour).  so, that is taking a big load off of my mind.  though, i will be handing over my firstborn child as penance.   i love that sweet thing.

in other news, jimmy and faythe have returned from whence they came, and are now back in their real home.  i love having them in town.  and later today, jimmy and i will face off in the new beginnings top chef competition.  pictures to come (hopefully).

if you guys would continue praying for me as i try to make plans for the coming year, that would be really appreciated.  there are a lot of things buzzing around my head, and i want to make decisions that will cause growth and not a return to old ways.

but, for now, i am looking forward to celebrating christmastime for the next couple of weeks, and then going home, and getting lots of hugs from people i haven't seen in a year, seeing and hearing how they've changed, and really realizing how different i am than i was a year ago.

check back for top chef updates later today.

quickie

headed out to the grocery store.

i went to the doctor with one of the girls yesterday.  it was awesome.  i forgot!  i just forgot how exciting this process can be, if we are 'let in'.

in other news, jess may have convinced me that i am getting sympathy sickness from all these pregnant pukers.  i had 2 slices of toast for lunch.  it's all mental, i know it.  but still..it's painful to watch them try to eat.  like they're being tortured.  that is..unless they're pounding a chalupa.

also, if you feel like praying for a puppy, you could pray for beulah, actually more for me, because she got fixed on tuesday, and trying to keep that crazy contained, is almost impossible. poor thing, she can't run around and play at all.  so maybe Jesus, you can magically take away some of the energy.  forever, Lord?  maybe just take some of the energy for eternity.  that'd be great.  for real.

must go, fred meyer is wondering where we've been.

God is my cigarette

it's been a while friends, hope you haven't forgotten about me out here.

the parents have come and gone, and beulah and i are sitting here watching fashion police. we had the best week ever. it was restful. it was fun. and i was sad to see them go.

they came all the way out here during their vacation time to do nothing but pamper me.  and beulah.  it was so sweet and selfless.  and i can't wait until christmas!

i have been all wrapped up in a blog lately. i actually posted a link to it (sort of) on my sidebar. an awesome couple from arizona was in a plane crash over a month ago, and survived, but are very badly injured/burned. the wife/mom is a blogger and over the last few days i have read all of her entries (about 3 years worth). i can't quit thinking about that family. the link on my sidebar is to this woman's sister's page who is updating for her while she's in the hospital.

anyway, starting tomorrow they are having a benefit sale to help cover at least a portion of their hospital bills.  go here.  maybe go buy a little something for yourself, or someone else and you can feel good about where the money is going:)

as i was driving home with one of our girls last night, she was talking about how she has dealt with stress in the past, and how God has changed things, thus the "God is my cigarette" comment.  it's too good to pass up.  really.

doggie day

well, every day is a doggie day for me these days, but today was an especially fun one.

right around lunch time every day beulah and i set out for some type of adventure.  it could be a nice long walk all through downtown puyallup, or a trip to the dog park, or even just walking down the street to play with her boyfriend, tucker.  today, the plan was to go to the dog park.  as we made our way down the path to the park, i didn't hear any dogs, so i figured we'd just hike through the numerous trails that surround the park.

now, you should know, last time i tried this i fell about hmm 200 feet or so down an incredibly steep decline.  poor beulah was much younger, and still connected to her leash when i fell, so she got dragged down with me.

needless to say, we were both a little hesitant when we started our hike.
but today was much different and we romped through the woods having no idea where we were going, but just explored, and got a little turned around, and ended up spending almost two hours running around the forest.  it was especially fun because i was able to take beulah off her leash and she stayed right with me the whole time.

she loved every second.  after getting our bearings and figuring out where we were, we played in the creek for a while, and then headed home.  all in all, there couldn't be a much better day for a dog.  soaked, muddy, and tired.  just the way i love 'em!

love this girl.

i would rather

well, i had been working on this other, more serious, and probably slightly confusing entry, but instead, i will inform you of the minutia filling my day thus far.

roll over, hear dog whimpering to be let out.
thought process:  just give me five more minutes, maybe fifteen.

it's amazing how magnified minutes become at 6am.

6:30am, wake up to an excited puppy, who promptly pees on my foot and licks my face off.
outside for potty and play.
i sit in the backyard, in my pajamas and bathrobe, and check my emails.

randy (jess' dad) comes out on the deck for a smoke, we exchange good mornings, beulah seeing randy, pees on herself.

i stay outside until my desire for coffee is inescapable.  come in, make coffee.  at this point, randy realizes his flight is today, not tomorrow.  packing ensues.

turn back and forth between the today show and the waltons.  say good morning to jess and babes.  beulah pees on herself.

i shower.

randy heads to airport.

beulah sleeps.
babies pretend to sleep.
jess and i play relaxation game, and pretend to schedule (or i just pretend, jess really does).

beulah wakes.
i walk around.
laundry.
preparing new girl's room.
lunch.

both babies up.

nick comes in, beulah sees him.
pees.

a few phone calls, and now i'm back outside.
checking my emails.

saturday morning gladness

some things i am excited about--in chronological order
  • doing a little cleaning up around the house this morning
  • maybe catching a nap today
  • enjoying my cup of coffee while catching an episode of little house on the prairie
  • beulah's second puppy class tonight. i am not totally sure if you can 'win' a puppy class, but we're going to try our darndest.
  • connollys coming home in 2 dayyyys.
  • the fact that beulah has started chasing/eating/killing horseflies as i type this.
  • new girls coming (could not be more excited about this)
  • the month of august (birthdays, radiohead, etc.)
  • my parents coming in september
  • fall in seattle
  • a puyallup family thanksgiving (imagine how awesome our dinner will be)
  • looking for plane tickets home to south carolina after being away for 9 months.
  • sitting in an overly-christmas-decorated-room with my whole family, including jake.

anna: "what kind of weird music is this?"

lauren: "uhh, do you really not know who this is? i have let you down during the time you lived with us. this is elton john."

anna: "oh right, you mean elton john newton."

lauren: "i'm sorry?"

anna: "elton john newton" (belligerence)

lauren: "wait, are you thinking about olivia newton john?"
